Keeping it Clean

Since the 1960s, vehicle manufacturers have been under intense pressure to reduce emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Early emissions control technologies included Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

As government standards became more stringent, the auto industry responded with the introduction of catalytic converters and sophisticated engine electronics to significantly reduce emissions of all three regulated gases.

Since 1996, every vehicle sold in the U.S. has been required to meet Onboard Diagnostic II (OBDII) standards. The OBDII system provides a visual alert to the driver any time emissions exceed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards by a factor of 1.5 or more. This protocol – and the resulting dashboard “Check Engine” warning light – has made emissions service one of the fastest growing areas of automotive repair.

Automotive emissions control systems comprise dozens of components ranging from valves and sensors to catalytic converters. These components work in concert with the fuel system, underhood electronics and engine to minimize emissions of environmental pollutants.
